On July 3rd of this year, twenty two year old Tony Ruszkowski of Weirton was killed in an auto-mobile accident. Tony left behind loving parents, a sister and most importantly, a fiancé with a baby on the way. He had recently begun working at a gas station and was looking forward to finding out the gender of their baby.
Tony, however, struggled with alcohol addiction, a struggle that ended his life. Tragically he made several attempts over the preceding few months to get treatment for his addiction only to find that there were ether no spots available - waiting lists of 6 months or longer- or that up front payment for as much as $20, 000 before enrolling. He was never able to receive any treatment before his death.
Roughly 14 million Americans are in need of treatment for alcohol use. 100,000 of them die each year, the third leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States. Tony’s family and close friends fine these statistics and barriers to treatment unacceptable. On October 8th 2011, a memorial golf tournament will be held at Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course. Proceeds will be split amongst three organizations: Never Alone WV, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and a scholarship fund to be established in Tony’s name.
Half of the tournaments proceeds will go to Never Alone WV, a Weirton, WV – based organization that provides support to those struggling with drug and alcohol addictions and their families. The ultimate goal of the organization is to one day open an affordable treatment and counseling center in our area.
One- quarter of the funds will be given to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, symbolic of Tony’s love for children. The remainder will be used for the scholarship fund –awarded to those whose lives have been touched by addiction.
Please concider sponsoring a hole, donating goods, or even registering a team for this event.
